Sorry dog trainers are not regulated

Writer: Roxy daviesRoxy davies

We have recently had an influx of customers who have already seen 'trainers' and been given terrible advice.

šŸ˜“Please beware! The dog training industry is not strictly regulated, so some may call themselves a dog trainer without being certified. Inexperienced or old-fashioned trainers could cause or worsen behavioural problems, by using unkind or ineffective methods

.Check List:

  • šŸ• Ensure kind, modern and effective training methods are used without the use of pain or fear.

  • Check the trainers website, social media for training examples- make sure there are no slip leads, pinch collars, shock collars. Check for happy relaxed body language rather than suppressed (scared to make a mistake)

  • šŸ• Check the trainers are experienced, fully qualified and insured. UK organisations that attempt to regulate trainers, include the APDT, COAPE, APBC, ABTC, IMDT and TCBTS.

  • šŸ• Watch a class before you decide to take your dog and observe how the trainer handles problematic situations and clients.

  • šŸ• Instead of ā€˜quick fixesā€™ that only suppress unwanted behaviour, ensure your dog is being provided with a positive outlet or coping strategies for their behaviour.

  • šŸ• Question what the trainer is doing and if you are uncomfortable with the way the dogs are being taught, protect your dog and leave.
